We hang a loaded bag from a hook and leave it for 30 minutes. Cheap film creeps — it elongates under sustained load until the walls go translucent and the knot migrates. We measure elongation and reject anything that thins past our threshold. This one matters more than people realize, because it simulates the real scenario: a bag swinging from your fingers for a 20-minute walk.
Fill with water, knot, submerge in a clear tub, and watch for 10 minutes. Water finds pinholes that your eyes never will. Any stream of bubbles, any clouding, and the batch is out. This is the single most useful test you can replicate at home in under five minutes — and the fastest way to expose a bag that only looks leakproof.
Real yards contain sticks, mulch, gravel, and the occasional rawhide shard. We load bags with abrasive media and knead them for 60 seconds. LLDPE-blend film resists tear propagation here; brittle films split along the puncture line almost instantly.

Aim for at least 0.7 mil for small breeds and 0.9 mil or higher for large dogs — but treat gauge as a starting point, not the whole answer. A quality LLDPE blend with a wide bottom weld outperforms a thicker, brittle recycled-blend bag in every test we’ve run.
